Turtle’s Grazing Gaze

After a breathtaking dive at the old Salt Pier, I encountered a couple of green turtles peacefully grazing on sea grass in the shallows. Careful not to disrupt them, I snorkeled around slowly, marveling at their grace as they aggressively stirred up the sands to nibble of the stubs of the sea grass. Eventually, I submerged a few feet to capture a couple of photos in the shallow of natural light, then returned to the surface to observe their dinner date as the gentle surge of the ocean rocked us.

I was grateful to be able to share a moment in the tranquil shallows with elegant and endangered creatures.

Endangered Species

Worldwide, six of the seven sea turtle species are classified as threatened or endangered due to human actions and lifestyles. Bonaire is the home to three of the world’s six endangered species of marine turtles: the hawksbill, green, and loggerhead turtle.

These green turtles weigh up to 230 kg (500 lbs), though on Bonaire most are much smaller. Bonaire has a juvenile and sub-adult population year-round with adult turtles usually only present during the nesting season.

Bonaire

Bonaire is an island in the Caribbean that is part of the Leeward Antilles and is a special municipality of the Netherlands. Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao form the ABC islands, 50 miles off the coast of Venezuela. Unlike much of the Caribbean region, the ABC islands are outside of the hurricane belt.

Bonaire is a popular snorkeling and scuba diving destination because of its multiple shore diving sites and easy access to the island's fringing reef system. The entire coastline was designated a marine sanctuary in 1979, an effort to preserve and protect the delicate coral reef and the marine life that depends on it.
