Wreck of the SS Dunraven

Promiscuity and Salty Secrets

Our cruise director shared stories about each wreck and this story ignited my imagination.

Below the Red Sea lies more than just sunken ships and coral reefs; there are tales of betrayal, passion, and mayhem that echo through the currents. As I descend into the shadowy realm of the SS Dunraven, the eerie atmosphere grips me, and my mind spins with speculation.

The haunting remnants of the once majestic vessel come into view, a solemn reminder of its tragic fate. What led the captain astray on that fateful night? Was it the siren call of forbidden desires, fueled by intoxicating spirits? I taste the salty secrets of the water as I clear my mask and explore the wreckage, each corroded section of hull whispering tales of treachery and turmoil.

Among the debris, I can't help but ponder the scandalous rumors that swirl like the ocean currents. Did the promiscuous wife weave a web of deceit, entangling hearts in a dangerous dance of infidelity? Or perhaps it was a conspiracy fueled by jealousy and revenge, shrouded in the cloak of darkness beneath the waves.

As I swim around the fractured hull, adorned with vibrant corals and abundant life, I am consumed by the allure of the unknown. The SS Dunraven may rest in silence now, but its secrets linger in the depths, waiting to be seen by those brave enough to dive into the abyss. With each kick of my fins, I am drawn deeper into the mystery of the SS Dunraven, my imagination moved by the whispers of the sea.

As I resurface, I carry with me not just memories of a sunken ship, but a tale of adultery and mayhem that will entice me long after I leave the shores of Egypt.

The SS Dunraven was a 262-foot British Steamer, built in 1873 and hit the reef on the southern edge of Sha’ab Mahmoud, also known as Beacon Rock, in 1876 on its way back from India. The wreck sits broken in two sections and completely upside down sitting at approximately 85’ and is covered in beautiful coral and surrounded by marine life. It was rediscovered in 1977 and is frequently visited by divers.
